2023 Siam Paragon shooting

On 3 October 2023, at approximately 4:10 p.m. local time, a mass shooting occurred at Siam Paragon, a major shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand. According to Wikipedia's account of the incident, the suspect — a 14-year-old male student — entered the mall after arriving at the adjacent Siam BTS station around 3:35 p.m. He was armed with a modified blank pistol that had been altered to fire live rounds. The attack resulted in 40 or more rounds being fired, 11 of which struck people.
Two women were killed at the scene: Zhao Jinnan, a 34-year-old Chinese tourist, and Moe Myint, a 31-year-old Burmese employee of a mall toy store. Five other people were injured, including another Chinese tourist, a Lao national, and three Thai nationals. One of the injured, 30-year-old Penpiwan Mitthampitak, died of her wounds on 13 October 2023, becoming the third fatality.
Police and mall security began evacuating the mall around 4:45 p.m. Officers located the suspect on the third floor of the Siam Kempinski Hotel, at the rear of the mall, where he reportedly surrendered after running out of ammunition. He was arrested at 5:10 p.m. and did not resist.
The suspect, identified as Phasid Trutassanawin (born 21 September 2009), attended a school near the mall and had reportedly received treatment for a mental health condition at Rajavithi Hospital but had recently stopped taking medication. Police chief Torsak Sukvimol said the suspect was "too confused to undergo questioning." According to the account, the suspect had poor grades in school, reported being bullied, and had shared images on a Discord server referencing other mass shooters, including the perpetrators of the Columbine High School attack. On 4 October 2023, he was charged with six offenses: premeditated murder, attempted murder, possessing a firearm without permission, carrying a firearm into a public area without permission, and shooting in a public area without permission. He was transferred to a juvenile detention center. Separately, police arrested three individuals on suspicion of selling the firearm and ammunition to the suspect, following raids in Bangkok and Yala Province where blank guns, ammunition, and gun barrels were seized.
The mall and adjacent BTS station were temporarily closed following the shooting; the station reopened by 5:20 p.m. The mall reopened the next day, with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin attending a minute's silence. Srettha also apologized to the Chinese ambassador for the deaths and injuries of Chinese nationals. On 6 October 2023, the suspect's family released a statement, via the Thai Foreign Ministry, accepting responsibility and apologizing, while pledging cooperation with the investigation.
