2024 Tuskegee University shooting

On the morning of November 10, 2024, at approximately 1:40 a.m., a shooting occurred at the West Commons on-campus apartments at Tuskegee University in Alabama, during the school's 100th Homecoming weekend. Multiple gunmen inside a Dodge Charger fired several rounds of ammunition at a crowd of people before exiting the vehicle and continuing to open fire. Video later shared on social media showed people ducking for cover in a parking lot as gunshots were heard, and an eyewitness reported crawling under a car before running to his dorm.
The shooting killed an 18-year-old man, La'Tavion Johnson, who was not affiliated with the university, and injured 16 other people, one critically. Four of the reported injuries were not gunshot-related. Victims were transported to and treated at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.
Two suspects were arrested by law enforcement officers as they left the scene of the shooting: 25-year-old Jaquez Myrick of Montgomery, Alabama, and Jeremiah Williams. Both were charged federally with possession of a machine gun after their semi-automatic pistols were found to have machine gun conversion devices, commonly known as Glock switches, installed. Myrick admitted to firing his weapon but denied aiming at anyone.
This shooting occurred amid a broader series of mass shootings associated with homecoming events at other universities and schools across the United States in October and November 2024, including incidents near Tennessee State University, at Albany State University, near Lexington, Mississippi, at North Carolina Central University, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and near the University of Louisiana in Lafayette.
In the aftermath, Tuskegee University canceled classes on November 11, made grief counselors available to students, and closed the campus temporarily, requiring students and faculty to wear identification while on campus. The university dismissed its campus security chief, and a newly appointed security chief reviewed the shooting. A funeral for Johnson was held on November 23, 2024.
Tuskegee police chief Patrick Mardis characterized the shooters, stating "Some idiots started shooting." Johnson's parents subsequently filed a lawsuit against Tuskegee University, Myrick, the former security chief, and others.
