On the morning of 27 October 2003, Baghdad was struck by a coordinated series of suicide car bombings targeting the International Committee of the Red Cross headquarters and four separate Iraqi police stations. The attacks began at approximately 8:30 am and all occurred within about 45 minutes of one another. The date coincided with the first day of Ramadan.

According to the available account, the operation involved six bombers in total. Four suicide bombers died in the course of the attacks on the targeted sites. A fifth and sixth attacker, both identified as Syrian nationals, attempted to detonate a car bomb at a fourth police station, but the vehicle apparently failed to explode as planned. Iraqi police intervened, killing one of the two men and wounding and arresting the other. During the confrontation, the Syrians set off a grenade, which wounded one of the attackers as well as an Iraqi police officer.

In total, the series of bombings killed 34 people and injured another 224. The attacks were among a wave of violence in Baghdad in that period, striking both a major humanitarian organization's headquarters and multiple sites of Iraqi law enforcement infrastructure on the same morning.
