Ateneo de Manila University shooting

On July 24, 2022, a mass shooting occurred at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines, leaving three people dead and three others injured, including the assailant. The attack took place outside the university's Areté building, the venue for a School of Law graduation ceremony scheduled about an hour earlier. The gunman, later identified as Chao-Tiao Yumol, a doctor from Lamitan, entered campus in a GrabTaxi with weapons unchecked despite a gun ban tied to heightened security for President Bongbong Marcos's upcoming State of the Nation Address. He blended into the crowd and waited for his target.
At around 3:30 p.m., Yumol opened fire, killing former Lamitan, Basilan mayor Rose Furigay, who was at the university for her daughter's graduation. Also killed were security guard Jeneven Bandiala, who attempted to stop the gunman, and Victor George Capistrano, Furigay's executive assistant. Furigay's daughter Hannah Furigay, a graduating student, and Julia Manabat, a nurse and mother of another graduate, were injured. Yumol was wounded by a gunshot from university security guards. Quezon City police stated the gunman was targeting Furigay specifically, with other victims described as collateral.
Yumol fled the scene by threatening a bystander identified as "Mr. Palma" and taking his vehicle, crashing through several vehicles on Aurora Boulevard before being blocked, fleeing on foot, and boarding a public minibus. Police, tipped off by motorcycle riders, stopped the minibus and arrested him. Yumol initially gave police an alias, Ramil Nicodemez y Hermo, before his true identity was established. Police said Yumol had a long-running personal conflict with the Furigay family, including more than 70 cyberlibel complaints he had filed against them over alleged drug trade and corruption involvement, which the Furigays' lawyer denied. In 2018 a cease-and-desist order had been issued against Yumol's clinic by the Bangsamoro government. A 9mm pistol registered to Yumol and a .45 caliber pistol reported lost by an Army officer in 2019 were recovered; authorities said no army personnel were involved.
On July 25, 2022, the Quezon City Police District charged Yumol with three counts of murder and attempted murder, plus illegal possession of a firearm, motor vehicle theft, and malicious mischief. President Marcos demanded an investigation, and Quezon City mayor Joy Belmonte condemned the shooting. The university canceled the law school graduation and pledged support to affected students and staff. Days after the attack, Yumol's father, Rolando Yumol, was shot dead by unidentified men in Lamitan; police cautioned against speculating a link to the university shooting. A separate, unrelated shooting of another man surnamed Yumol on August 6 was initially misreported as connected before police corrected the record.
