    Ninoy Aquino International Airport (formerly Manila International Airport), Pasay, Philippines · 1983

    Assassination of Ninoy Aquino

    Former Philippine senator and Marcos opponent Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was shot dead on the tarmac of Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983, moments after returning from exile. Rolando Galman, blamed by the government for the killing, was also shot dead at the scene. Sixteen military personnel were ultimately convicted of the murders.

    Manila hostage crisis

    On August 23, 2010, former police officer Rolando Mendoza hijacked a tourist bus in Rizal Park, Manila, holding 25 people hostage. After a ten-hour standoff broadcast live worldwide, negotiations collapsed and Mendoza killed eight hostages before police stormed the bus and fatally shot him.

    2020 Greenhills hostage crisis

    On March 2, 2020, a security guard took 55 people hostage at Virra Mall in Greenhills, San Juan, Philippines, demanding to air grievances over his alleged unjust termination. One officer was shot and wounded, but all hostages were freed unharmed after a nine-hour standoff.

    A suicide bombing at Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City, Philippines, on March 4, 2003, killed 22 civilians and injured over 100 others, in an attack blamed on the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

    2016 Davao City bombing

    A bomb exploded at the Roxas Night Market in Davao City, Philippines, on September 2, 2016, killing 15 people and injuring 70. Eleven men, several linked to the Maute group, were later convicted of murder and attempted murder in the attack.

    Killing of Gisela Boniel

    Gisela Bendong-Boniel, the sitting mayor of Bien Unido, Bohol, Philippines, was killed on June 7, 2017, in a plot involving her husband, provincial board member Niño Rey Boniel. Her body has never been recovered. In 2022, Niño Rey pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of homicide and was sentenced to 8–14 years in prison; he still faces separate kidnapping and serious illegal detention charges.

    On August 24, 2020, two bombs detonated minutes apart in Jolo, Sulu, Philippines — a motorcycle bomb near a military truck and a female suicide bomber near a cathedral — killing 14 people and wounding 75 others.
