Columbus nightclub shooting

On the evening of December 8, 2004, the heavy metal band Damageplan was headlining a concert at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, when 25-year-old Nathan Gale rushed the stage during the opening song and opened fire with a Beretta 92FS 9mm semiautomatic pistol. Gale shot guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott four times at point-blank range, killing him. Abbott, born Darrell Abbott, had co-founded Pantera with his brother Vinnie Paul before the two formed Damageplan following Pantera's split.
Gale continued firing on others at the venue. Tour manager Chris Paluska was shot before Damageplan's head of security, Jeffrey "Mayhem" Thompson, tackled Gale and was fatally shot in the struggle. Nathan Bray, a fan who leapt onto the stage to try to help Abbott and Thompson, was fatally shot. Erin "Stoney" Halk, an Alrosa Villa employee and former Marine who confronted Gale, was also mortally wounded. Drum technician John Brooks was shot and taken hostage, and road crew member Travis Burnett was grazed by a bullet.
Approximately three minutes after the shooting began, Columbus Division of Police Officer James Niggemeyer entered the club through a backstage door and shot Gale once in the face with a shotgun, killing him instantly. Gale had fired 15 rounds and had additional ammunition on his person at the time of his death.
Gale was a former U.S. Marine who had told his mother and employer he had been discharged due to paranoid schizophrenia. Friends had observed increasingly erratic behavior from him in the months before the shooting, including claims that Pantera had plagiarized lyrics he believed were his own. An autopsy found no drugs in his system. Investigators were unable to determine a definitive motive; theories involving Pantera's breakup and a published interview with singer Phil Anselmo were considered but not substantiated by evidence linking Gale to the interview.
Niggemeyer was brought before a grand jury as standard procedure following the use of deadly force and was cleared of wrongdoing on May 23, 2005. He received several commendations for his actions, including recognition from the National Rifle Association, and later retired from the police department in 2011 after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The shooting prompted discussion within the music community about concert security, particularly regarding fans rushing the stage. Several artists released musical tributes to Abbott in the years following his death. The Alrosa Villa nightclub continued operating until 2020, when it closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the building was demolished in December 2021 to make way for a housing development.
