Bethany Deaton, 27, was found dead inside a locked minivan near Longview Lake in Jackson County, Missouri, on October 30, 2012. Associated Press reporting states that investigators found a bag over her head, a handwritten note, and an empty acetaminophen bottle in the vehicle. Authorities initially classified the death as suicide.
The investigation changed direction when a man told police he had killed Deaton. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder, but he later recanted. His attorneys said the statement was false and made during a mental-health crisis. The accusation brought public attention to Deaton's religious community, but the available evidence did not establish that any uncharged person caused her death.
Jackson County prosecutors later reviewed the physical and testimonial evidence. KMBC reported that the statement was unsupported: the man's DNA was not found on the bag, handwriting analysis attributed the note to Deaton, a drug he claimed had been used was absent from toxicology findings, and investigators found no corroborating electronic evidence. On October 7, 2014, the medical examiner transmitted a revised finding that Deaton's manner of death was undetermined.
Later in October 2014, prosecutors dismissed the murder charge, saying they could not ethically continue on the available evidence. Associated Press reporting independently confirmed that the charge was dropped because the statement was considered unreliable. No murder charge remains pending. The case is classified as unsolved because the official manner is undetermined and the verified evidence does not establish whether Deaton died by suicide or through another person's act.
