Melanie Hall was a 25-year-old clerical officer at Bath's Royal United Hospital, originally from Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. She had graduated from the University of Bath in 1995 with a degree in sociology and psychology. Her father, Stephen Hall, had been chairman of Bath City Football Club.

On the night of 8–9 June 1996, Hall went to Cadillacs nightclub in Walcot Street, Bath, with her boyfriend Philip Karlbaum and another couple. The couple had an argument, and Karlbaum left the club "upset" after allegedly seeing Hall dancing with another man. Hall was last seen sitting on a stool in the club at around 1:10 am on 9 June 1996. She was reported missing on 11 June 1996 by her parents after she failed to appear for work.

Avon and Somerset police carried out extensive searches, including of the River Avon, and interviewed thousands of clubbers and taxi drivers. A £10,000 reward was offered, and BBC's Crimewatch and Crimestoppers made public appeals. The 5 November 1996 Crimewatch broadcast detailed several unconfirmed sightings of a woman resembling Hall in the vicinity of Walcot Street around the time of her disappearance, including one witness who reported seeing a man coaxing a woman into a nearby car park. No trace of Hall was found at the time, and she was declared legally dead on 17 November 2004.

On 5 October 2009, a motorway worker clearing vegetation at Junction 14 of the M5 near Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, found a plastic bin bag containing human bones, including a skull, pelvis and thigh bone; further remains were found buried nearby. Police showed a piece of jewellery recovered at the scene to Hall's parents, who confirmed it had belonged to their daughter. The remains were formally identified as Hall's through dental records on 7 October 2009. She had suffered severe blunt trauma resulting in a fractured skull, cheekbone and jaw, and blue rope had been used to tie the bin bags around her body; a definitive cause of death could not be established.

Following the discovery, police continued the investigation, codenamed Operation Denmark. In October 2009, three keys to a Ford vehicle were found near the remains. In October 2019, police stated they had obtained a partial DNA profile from the rope used to bind the remains, and Hall's parents reinstated a reward, then set at £50,000, for information leading to a conviction.

Several arrests have been made over the years but no charges have resulted. In 1998, John Cannan, the suspected killer of Suzy Lamplugh, was questioned in connection with claims he had plotted an abduction from prison, though he was incarcerated at the time Hall disappeared. Other arrests occurred in 2003, 2009, 2010 (twice), 2013, and 2016, involving men from Bath and Wiltshire, but all were released without charge. By October 2019, eleven arrests had been made in total. Possible links to other cases, including those of Suzy Lamplugh, Levi Bellfield, and an unidentified assailant known as the "Batman rapist," have been considered by police; a suggested link to Christopher Halliwell has been ruled out by Avon and Somerset Police.
