Death of Stephen Smith

Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old nursing student, was found dead in the middle of Sandy Run Road in rural Hampton County, South Carolina, shortly before 4 a.m. on July 8, 2015. He had suffered a severe head injury. Responders found none of the debris or skid marks usually associated with a vehicle strike, and Smith's car was located about three miles away.
The initial autopsy attributed Smith's death to being struck by a motor vehicle, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol handled the early investigation. Investigators from multiple agencies disagreed about whether the scene and injuries fit a hit-and-run, and the inquiry eventually became inactive without an arrest.
On June 22, 2021, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division opened its own investigation after receiving information developed during another case. SLED later emphasized that its agents had investigated without regard to rumor and that no evidence tied a publicly discussed family to Smith's death. No one has been charged.
On March 21, 2023, SLED Chief Mark Keel confirmed that the agency had treated Smith's death as homicide from the beginning of its inquiry and had devoted additional agents to the case. Smith's body was exhumed on March 31 at his family's request for an independent second autopsy. Public reporting described blunt-force findings, but SLED did not publish the complete autopsy report or identify a perpetrator.
Ten years after Smith's death, reporting in July 2025 continued to describe the SLED homicide investigation as active, with no announced indictment. It does not assign responsibility to any uncharged person and does not present family or attorney theories about motive as official findings.
