On 17 December 1967, Harold Holt, the 17th prime minister of Australia, disappeared while swimming near Portsea, Victoria. He was spending the weekend at his beach house and, after a visit to Point Nepean with neighbour Marjorie Gillespie, her daughter, and two family friends, suggested the group stop at Cheviot Beach for a swim. Despite a large swell and visible currents, Holt entered the water and swam out; he was dragged into deeper water, did not call for help, and disappeared beneath the waves. Alan Stewart, the only other swimmer, could not reach him.

Following the disappearance, Victoria Police initiated one of the largest search operations in Australian history, involving more than 340 personnel at its peak, along with helicopters, watercraft, and naval diving teams. The search was repeatedly hampered by rough seas and strong winds and was officially called off on 5 January 1968. Holt's body was never recovered.

A memorial service was held on 22 December 1967 at St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, attended by numerous world leaders including UK Prime Minister Harold Wilson, US President Lyndon B. Johnson, and UN Secretary-General U Thant. Because no body was found, no prayers of committal were made. John McEwen served as caretaker prime minister until John Gorton was elected Liberal Party leader on 9 January 1968.

The 1968 police report, led by detective Jack Ford, reached no definitive findings due to lack of evidence but specifically ruled out suicide, noting Holt had followed an ordinary domestic pattern before his disappearance. Formal responsibility for investigation lay with Victoria Police rather than a federal agency, and the government declined to hold its own inquiry. Victorian law did not permit a coronial inquest without a body until 1985. In August 2003, State Coroner Graeme Johnstone announced a review of cold cases involving drownings without recovered bodies, and Holt's case was included. A formal inquest opened in August 2005, with findings issued the following month concluding that "Mr Holt took an unnecessary risk and drowned in rough water off Cheviot Beach" and that there was nothing in the gathered material indicating anything other than drowning.

The disappearance generated numerous conspiracy theories, including claims of assassination by the CIA or North Vietnamese forces, and a widely publicized 1983 book alleging Holt was a Chinese spy collected by a submarine — a theory reviewers identified as containing multiple factual errors, including the physical impossibility of a submarine approaching that close to shore. Holt's wife Zara and other associates rejected these theories, as well as suggestions of suicide. Holt's disappearance has become a significant part of Australian cultural memory, commemorated through memorials including the Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Centre and the USS Harold E. Holt.
