The case file
Daniel James Morcombe (born 19 December 1989) was abducted on Sunday, 7 December 2003, from an unofficial bus stop under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass in the Woombye district of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, approximately two kilometres north of the Big Pineapple. He was 13 years old. Witnesses reported seeing Morcombe at around 2:10 PM under the overpass. He had planned to catch a bus to the Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre for a haircut and to buy Christmas presents, but his scheduled bus had broken down; a replacement bus did not stop because it was running behind schedule and the stop was unofficial. The driver radioed for another bus, and witnesses, including the driver, later reported seeing two men near Morcombe. By the time a second bus arrived three minutes later, Morcombe and the men were gone.
Morcombe's disappearance became one of the most extensively investigated crimes in Queensland's history. By December 2008, government and privately donated rewards totalling A$1 million had been offered. In 2009, media coverage raised questions about a known paedophile who had been released from prison shortly before Morcombe's disappearance, prompting political criticism and calls for restrictions on naming persons linked to criminal cases. A coronial inquest was held between October 2010 and April 2011, hearing from the bus driver, a witness who had seen a man loitering near Morcombe, and several persons of interest.
On 13 August 2011, following an extensive undercover "Mr. Big" police operation, Brett Peter Cowan was taken into custody and charged with Morcombe's murder, child stealing, deprivation of liberty, indecent treatment of a child under 16, interfering with a corpse, and other offences, after leading undercover detectives to Morcombe's remains. Cowan had previously been interviewed by police in 2006 and admitted travelling along Kiel Mountain Road on the day of the disappearance; he later confessed to approaching Morcombe and offering him a lift.
On 21 August 2011, shoes and human bones matching items Morcombe was wearing were found at a search site in the Glass House Mountains. Seventeen bones in total were recovered and confirmed via DNA, matched against a toothbrush, to belong to Morcombe. His funeral was held on 7 December 2012.
Cowan stood trial in the Supreme Court of Queensland beginning 10 February 2014, before Justice Roslyn Atkinson. He pleaded not guilty and did not give evidence. On 13 March 2014, he was found guilty of murder, indecently dealing with a child under 16, and interfering with a corpse. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 20 years for the murder, plus concurrent shorter terms for the other offences. Cowan's appeal against conviction, and a separate appeal by the state seeking a longer minimum term, were both dismissed by the Queensland Court of Appeal on 21 May 2015.
The Morcombe family established the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to promote child safety education, supported by annual "Day for Daniel" and "Ride for Daniel" events. The case has been the subject of television, podcast, and film coverage, and informed the naming of "Daniel's Law," Queensland's public child sex offender register established in 2025.
