Illustrative

Jeremy Doland Bright, born May 25, 1972, in Baltimore, Maryland, was a fourteen-year-old resident of Grants Pass, Oregon, who was raised in Myrtle Point, Oregon. In August 1986 he was staying with his stepfather and ten-year-old sister, S'te, in Myrtle Point while visiting family. On Wednesday, August 13, 1986, Bright attended the Coos County Fair with a friend, Johnny Fish, called his mother Diane from a payphone, and arranged for her to pick him and his sister up on August 15. That evening he met his stepfather at a tavern owned by his grandmother and received money to attend the fair the next day; this was the last time his stepfather or grandmother saw him.

On Thursday, August 14, 1986, Bright returned to the fair with his sister. The two separated at approximately 2 p.m., planning to reunite at 5 p.m. near the ferris wheel. Bright never reappeared. He was last seen wearing a black windbreaker, red tank top, blue nylon shorts, and black size 13 Nike shoes with red laces. The following day, his mother arrived in Myrtle Point to find his wallet, watch, and apartment keys left behind, and she reported him missing to authorities.

Law enforcement initially suspected foul play, but on August 23, 1986, one week after his disappearance, they publicly reversed that assessment after reports of Bright being sighted in the area as late as August 16 or 17, and considered the possibility he had run away with a traveling carnival. Conflicting witness accounts, including from his sister, described Bright being "forcibly removed" by an unidentified man near the ferris wheel between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m., though these sightings were not confirmed.

Numerous rumors and tips circulated in Myrtle Point, including claims that Bright had fatally overdosed on a drug-laced beer at a party, or that he had been accidentally shot near the Coquille River and later died after an attempted at-home recovery, with his body buried in a shallow grave. Investigators searched cabins, wells, and other locations tied to these tips but found no evidence. A 1989 episode of Unsolved Mysteries covered the case and detailed these theories.

Terry Lee Steinhoff, a local man who had previously babysat Bright and in whose truck Bright was reportedly last seen, was considered a suspect after being charged in January 1989 with the stabbing death of 32-year-old Patricia Morris. Steinhoff died in prison in 2007 of a heroin overdose; he was never charged in connection with Bright's disappearance.

Search efforts continued for decades, including a 2016 search of a pond roughly 25 miles from Myrtle Point based on a tip, which found nothing. In August 2011, Bright's family held a formal memorial service, having come to presume him dead. As of the most recent reporting, his whereabouts remain unknown.
