Shane Patrick Moore, 63, was fatally shot on July 26, 2016, at his parents' home in Applegate, Oregon. His niece, Aisling Tucker Moore-Reed — known publicly under the pen name Tucker Reed, a co-author of the young adult novel series Amber House — was arrested the same day in connection with the shooting.

Reed, born October 15, 1989, in Los Gatos, California, had previously gained public attention as an anti-sexual-violence activist, publishing allegations of assault against a former partner on a blog and founding the Student Coalition Against Rape while a student at the University of Southern California. Those allegations were rejected by the Los Angeles Police Department, a private investigator, and the Los Angeles District Attorney's office, and Reed was later found liable for defamation in a related counter-suit.

Following the July 2016 shooting, a grand jury indicted Reed on July 29, 2016, on charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter. Bail was set at $200,000. Reed's mother, Kelly Moore, told the press at the time that her daughter had been protecting her from the uncle.

The case escalated on September 5, 2018, when prosecutors — Deputy District Attorney Marco Boccato and District Attorney Beth Heckert — added a charge of second-degree murder, citing "some new evidence" that had surfaced since the original indictment.

While the case was pending, Reed faced separate charges in January 2020 for supplying contraband and unlawfully possessing heroin while housed at the Jackson County Jail.

On May 27, 2020, Reed pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in connection with her uncle's death. As part of the plea agreement, the first-degree manslaughter and second-degree murder charges were dismissed. She was sentenced to six years and three months in prison and was incarcerated at the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, Oregon.

In January 2021, Reed filed a malpractice lawsuit against her defense attorney, alleging he had failed to adequately represent her and had caused her to accept an involuntary or false plea deal; the lawsuit was dismissed by the court in May 2021.

The case later received media attention through a Dateline NBC podcast titled "Killer Role," which premiered in October 2020, and an episode of the true-crime series Snapped that profiled the case the following year. According to NBC's documentary coverage, Reed was released from custody in November 2024.
