Goseong military base shooting

On the evening of 21 June 2014, Senior Sergeant Lim Do-bin, a soldier of the Republic of Korea Army's 22nd Infantry Division, opened fire at the 13th outpost of the division's 55th Regiment in Goseong County, Gangwon Province. According to an Army statement issued the day after the incident, Lim fired about 10 bullets from his K-2 rifle, killing five people—soldiers and noncommissioned officers—and injuring seven others. He had been assigned weekly guard duty and was issued a rifle, a grenade, and 75 rounds of live ammunition; instead of returning the weapons at the end of his shift, he threw a grenade and opened fire on a fellow soldier at a road junction on the outpost's rear supply route around 8:15 p.m., then continued shooting at fleeing soldiers and entered the dormitory to fire on more personnel. Three victims died outside the dormitory and two inside. Lim then deserted the base carrying his rifle and several dozen rounds of ammunition.
The Ministry of National Defense set up an accident task force and issued a "One Jindo Dog" alert, the highest localized military and police emergency designation, though this was criticized as delayed by roughly two hours. Some 3,500 troops from nine battalions searched for Lim; the effort was later criticized because Lim reportedly had contact with search parties more than three times without being recognized, having given a false identity. On 22 June, he was tracked to Hyeonnae-myeon, about 10 km from the original shooting site, where a firefight injured a platoon leader; around 500 residents near Myeongpa Elementary School were evacuated. Lim's parents were brought to the scene to appeal for his surrender, but he fled again around 11 p.m.
On 23 June, special forces and snipers located Lim. A friendly-fire incident that morning injured a corporal. Negotiators, including Lim's parents and brother, spoke with him for hours; he stated he expected execution if he returned. He was captured at 2:44 p.m. after shooting himself in the abdomen in an apparent suicide attempt, leaving a note apologizing to victims' families. He underwent emergency surgery, including partial lung resection.
Reporting attributed the shooting to hazing and ostracism Lim experienced within his unit, including being mocked with SpongeBob caricatures. The military's July 2014 investigation concluded the attack was in revenge for bullying he had suffered in the army and earlier at school. In October 2014, the Army disciplined two division commanders in connection with the shooting and a separate hazing death in another division. On 3 February 2015, the General Military Court of the First Army Command sentenced Lim to death, describing the crimes as persistent, planned, and brutal.
