    On July 16, 1950, during the Battle of the Kum River, Korean People's Army (KPA) troops killed an unarmed U.S. Army chaplain and thirty critically wounded, unarmed American soldiers left in his and a medic's care on a mountain near the village of Tuman, South Korea.

    2016 Seocho-dong public-toilet murder case

    A 34-year-old man fatally stabbed a 23-year-old woman he had never met in a karaoke bar's public restroom in Seocho-dong, Seoul, in May 2016. He was convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison; the case sparked national debate over misogyny and mental illness in South Korea.

    Itaewon murder case

    In 1997, 22-year-old Cho Jung-pil was fatally stabbed in a Burger King restroom in Itaewon, Seoul; after years of legal disputes, acquittals, and an extradition fight, Arthur Patterson was convicted of the murder in 2016 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

    2008 Nonhyeon-dong Gosiwon Murders

    On 20 October 2008, Jeong Sang-jin set fire to his room in a Nonhyeon-dong gosiwon in Seoul and attacked fleeing residents with knives, killing six people and injuring seven; he was sentenced to death in May 2009.
