John Darwin disappearance case
John Darwin faked his death in a 2002 canoeing accident off Seaton Carew to collect life insurance, secretly living near his family before resurfacing in 2007; he and his wife Anne were convicted of fraud in 2008.

John Darwin, a former teacher and prison officer from Hartlepool, England, was reported missing on 21 March 2002 after being seen paddling out to sea in a kayak at Seaton Carew and failing to report to work. A large-scale sea search covering 62 square miles of coastline found no trace of him, though a paddle and wreckage from his kayak were recovered the next day. A death certificate was later issued, allowing his wife, Anne Darwin, to claim approximately £250,000 in life insurance from Unat Direct Insurance Management Limited, part of the AIG insurance group. The payout enabled the couple to pay off a £130,000 mortgage accumulated after they ran into debt from property purchases in Seaton Carew.
In reality, Darwin had faked his death. He lived for a period in a bedsit next door to the family home before secretly moving back in with Anne in February 2003. During the years he was presumed dead, Darwin obtained a false passport under the name "John Jones," using the identity of a baby from Sunderland who had died in 1950. He traveled under this and other false identities, including trips to Cyprus, Cornwall, Spain, and eventually Panama, where he and Anne were photographed together in 2006. The couple purchased property in Panama, including a tropical estate near the Panama Canal, using proceeds from the sale of their UK properties.
The scheme began to unravel in September 2007 when a colleague of Anne's grew suspicious after overhearing a phone conversation, prompting a police financial investigation. On 1 December 2007, Darwin walked into a London police station claiming amnesia. Days later, the Daily Mirror published the 2006 Panama photograph, discovered via a Google Images search, and Anne confirmed it showed her husband. Darwin was arrested at his son's house in Basingstoke, and Anne was arrested at Manchester Airport upon returning to the UK.
Both were charged with multiple counts of fraud relating to the life insurance, a teachers' pension scheme, and Department for Work and Pensions payments, as well as a passport offence for Darwin. On 13 March 2008, at Leeds Crown Court, John Darwin admitted seven charges of obtaining cash by deception and a passport offence. Anne Darwin denied the charges against her. On 23 July 2008, both were convicted of fraud: John was sentenced to six years and three months, and Anne to six years and six months. Their appeals were dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 27 March 2009. John was released on probation in January 2011 and Anne in March 2011. By July 2015, the couple had repaid a total of £541,762.39 of the money owed, having exhausted their remaining assets.
