Kidnapping of Michelle and Breea Renee

On November 21, 2000, three masked men entered the Vista, California, home of bank manager Michelle Renee. Her seven-year-old daughter Breea and an adult roommate were also inside. The intruders restrained the three victims and held them overnight, threatening to kill them unless Michelle removed money from the bank she managed.
The next morning, the captors attached devices made to resemble explosives to the hostages. Breea was kept at the home while Michelle was taken to the bank, where she removed approximately $360,000 and turned it over. Bomb technicians later established that the devices were inert, but the victims had no way to know that during the captivity. All three survived.
Investigators connected Christopher Butler, Christopher Huggins, Robert Ortiz, and Lisa Ramirez to the prosecution. Their legal outcomes differed and must remain separate. A jury convicted Butler of bank robbery and kidnapping Breea and the roommate but did not reach a verdict on the kidnapping count involving Michelle. Ramirez was acquitted on all counts. Huggins and Ortiz were convicted in a later trial of conspiracy, kidnapping-for-robbery, kidnapping-for-ransom, robbery, and burglary counts.
Butler received multiple life sentences. CBS later reported that Ortiz was released in 2021, Butler in 2024, and Huggins in 2025; those dates are reported parole outcomes, not independently established here through corrections records. CBS also reported that Butler recanted the claim he had made at trial that Michelle participated in the plan.
The record treats Michelle, Breea, and the roommate as victims. Ramirez is identified only through the acquittal returned by the jury, and no rejected prosecution theory is presented as proof of her involvement.
