Illustrative

Darya Dugina (15 December 1992 – 20 August 2022) was a Russian journalist and political scientist who wrote for state-controlled outlets including RT and Tsargrad under the pen name Daria Platonova. She was the daughter of far-right political philosopher Aleksandr Dugin and shared his support for Vladimir Putin and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In March 2022 the U.S. Treasury sanctioned her as chief editor of a disinformation website, and in July 2022 the United Kingdom sanctioned her over disinformation related to the invasion.

On 20 August 2022, around 21:45 local time, Dugina was killed when the car she was driving exploded on the Mozhayskoye Highway near Bolshiye Vyazyomy outside Moscow, as she returned from a festival called "Tradition." Investigators said an explosive device had been attached to the underside of the vehicle. Her father had reportedly been expected to travel with her but switched to a different car shortly before the explosion, leaving it unclear whether Darya Dugina, her father, or both were the intended target.

On 22 August 2022, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said Ukrainian special services were responsible and named a Ukrainian national, Natalia Vovk, as the primary suspect, alleging she had rented an apartment in Dugina's building, attended the same festival, and fled to Estonia afterward using multiple false license plates. The FSB later named an alleged male accomplice who purportedly supplied false documents and assisted with bomb assembly. In October 2023, The Washington Post reported that Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) had carried out numerous assassinations inside Russia during the war, including the bombing that killed Dugina, and that Vovk had allegedly smuggled bomb components into Russia in a cat carrier; the SBU head, Vasyl Malyuk, said the operations were "completely legitimate" without directly confirming this case, and later indirectly confirmed Ukraine's involvement.

A separate, unverified claim of responsibility came from Ilya Ponomarev, a former Russian State Duma member living in exile in Ukraine, who said an underground group calling itself the National Republican Army (NRA) carried out the killing as part of a campaign against Putin. Multiple journalists and analysts, including at Meduza, Deutsche Welle, and The New Yorker, expressed skepticism about the group's existence and Ponomarev's account, and outlets including the Associated Press, Reuters, and The Guardian reported the claim could not be confirmed.

Ukrainian officials initially denied state involvement, with presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak suggesting internal Russian rivalries were responsible. According to The New York Times, a U.S. intelligence assessment reported in October 2022 concluded that parts of the Ukrainian government had authorized the killing, with some U.S. officials believing Aleksandr Dugin, not his daughter, was the intended target.

Putin sent condolences and posthumously awarded Dugina the Order of Courage. She was buried following a funeral in Moscow Oblast attended by senior Russian political and media figures.
