Killing of Marvin Gaye
Documents violence · domestic violence · suicide — written to inform, not to shock.

On April 1, 1984, the day before his 45th birthday, singer and songwriter Marvin Gaye was shot and killed at his parents' home in the Western Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. According to Wikipedia's account of the case, the killing was carried out by his father, Marvin Gay Sr., and followed years of tension between the two men, rooted in a difficult relationship dating to Gaye's childhood.
On the day of the shooting, an argument between Gaye's parents over a misplaced insurance document escalated when Marvin Sr. went upstairs to confront Gaye's mother, Alberta, in Gaye's bedroom. Gaye ordered his father out and, when his father did not comply, physically pushed and struck him. Gaye's mother later told police she saw her husband return to the room minutes later with a .38 caliber pistol — a gun Gaye had given his father as a Christmas gift the previous year — and shoot Gaye once in the chest at close range, then a second time at point-blank range. The first shot proved fatal, perforating his lung, heart, diaphragm, liver, and kidney. A 2018 television forensic analysis by pathologist Michael Hunter offered a differing account of the shot sequence, suggesting a nonfatal shoulder wound preceded the fatal chest wound.
Gaye was found by his brother Frankie, who held him as he died; his sister-in-law Irene Gaye called emergency services and later retrieved the gun from under Marvin Sr.'s pillow. Paramedics reportedly delayed treatment for about 20 minutes amid uncertainty over the location of the gun and Marvin Sr. Gaye was taken to California Hospital Medical Center and pronounced dead on arrival at 1:01 p.m. Family members, including his sister Jeanne, described the death as a "premeditated suicide," citing Gaye's history of substance abuse, paranoia, and prior suicidal statements and behavior.
Marvin Gay Sr. was arrested at the scene and held on bail. During police questioning he said he acted in self-defense and believed the gun contained blanks or BBs. After a competency evaluation found him fit for trial, Gay Sr. pleaded no contest to a charge of voluntary manslaughter on September 20, 1984. On November 2, 1984, he was sentenced to a six-year suspended sentence and five years of probation. Toxicology found cocaine and PCP in Gaye's system at the time of his death, which was discussed during pretrial proceedings.
A funeral attended by more than 10,000 mourners was held on April 5, 1984, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. Gaye's body was cremated, with part of his ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean. Gaye's death drew widespread media coverage and tributes from the music industry, and he has since been honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and other memorials.
