March 2015 Bamako shooting

On March 7, 2015, an attack occurred at La Terrace restaurant in the Hippodrome district of Bamako, the capital of Mali, on a busy street. Five people were shot dead and nine others were wounded. Two of those killed were Malian nationals, while the others were French and Belgian.

Local police in Bamako responded to the attack and initially described it as a terrorist act pending further clarification. A police department statement said: "This is a terrorist attack, although we're waiting for clarification. Provisionally, there are four dead – one French national, a Belgian and two Malians." Victims of the shooting were taken to Gabriel Toure hospital for treatment.

The jihadist group Al-Mourabitoun claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack drew condemnation from senior officials in France and Belgium. François Hollande, the President of France at the time, condemned the attack as "cowardly." The French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius, stated that France would work to strengthen Mali's resolve to "fight terrorism in all its forms." Didier Reynders, the Belgian Foreign Minister, also condemned the attack and said it may have been an act of terrorism.
