Unsolved case

March 2017 Maiduguri bombings

On 22 March 2017, three to five bombers detonated explosives at three locations within the Muna Garage displaced-persons camp in Maiduguri, Nigeria, killing three to five civilian residents and the bombers, and injuring 20 others.

Illustrative

In the early morning of 22 March 2017, at approximately 4:30 a.m., a series of bomb blasts struck three locations in the Muna Garage area of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria. The explosions occurred at the Muna Garage camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs), which housed civilians who had fled violence elsewhere in the region.

According to available reporting, the attacks were carried out by three to five bombers operating at the different blast sites. The bombers died in the explosions along with three to five civilian residents of the camp. An additional 20 people were injured in the attacks.

No terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the bombings. However, the jihadist insurgent group Boko Haram, which had carried out numerous previous attacks in Maiduguri, is believed to be responsible for the March 2017 blasts. This attribution is based on the group's established pattern of attacks in the area rather than a formal claim of responsibility.

The Muna Garage IDP camp, like other displacement camps in the Lake Chad Basin region, has been a repeated target of violence amid the broader Boko Haram insurgency that has displaced large numbers of civilians across northeastern Nigeria. The camp's population, many of whom had already been displaced by prior conflict, was directly affected by this attack.

The case remains without a confirmed claim of responsibility or identified perpetrators.
