Mdantsane killings (2002)

On 9 February 2002, a mass shooting took place in Mdantsane, a large township near East London in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The gunman, Bulelani Vukwana (also spelled Vukwane), was a security guard whose former girlfriend had recently ended their relationship.

According to the available accounts, Vukwana went to his former girlfriend's home, but she refused to see him. He then went to a nearby shebeen (an informal bar), where he wounded the owner and killed another man. He returned to his former girlfriend's house during a family gathering and shot her at close range, then fired on motorists and pedestrians in the surrounding area. In total, eleven people were killed and six others were wounded.

When police located Vukwana, he fired at the officers and attempted to flee before fatally shooting himself in the head. Because the gunman died at the scene, no one was prosecuted; the case is documented as a murder-suicide.

The incident is recorded among mass shootings in South Africa, where such attacks have been linked variously to interpersonal disputes, gang activity, and other conflicts. In this case, the shooting is attributed to a personal dispute following the end of the perpetrator's relationship.
