Melbourne gangland killings

Between January 1998 and August 2010, 36 underworld figures were killed in Melbourne, Victoria, in a wave of retributive violence known as the Melbourne gangland killings. The murders emerged from a power vacuum in the city's criminal networks, with roots traceable to the postwar Painters and Dockers Union on Melbourne's waterfront, which had a mafia-like structure tied to control of drug distribution, protection rackets, illegal gambling and armed robbery. By 1990, police described Melbourne as the "amphetamine capital of Australia." The 1996 arrest of major amphetamine trafficker John Higgs created an opening that younger criminals, including Jason Moran and Carl Williams, moved to fill.
The killings are generally dated from the murder of Alphonse Gangitano on 16 January 1998, followed by the murder of Charles "Mad Charlie" Hegyalji in November of that year. Associates of these two men rose to prominence and, in turn, became targets, including Vince Mannella and Dimitrios Belias. The conflict escalated sharply after Carl Williams was shot in the stomach by Jason and Mark Moran on 13 October 1999 during a dispute over drug proceeds. Williams survived and subsequently pursued the killing of members of the Moran family and their allies in the so-called Carlton Crew. Detectives from the Purana Taskforce, established in 2003, later assessed that Williams was responsible for at least 10 of the killings.
Numerous named factions were involved, including the Honoured Society, the Painters and Dockers/Moran family, the Carlton Crew, the Radev Gang, the Sunshine Crew and the Williams family. Victims across the period included Frank Benvenuto, Mark Moran, Dino Dibra, Nik Radev, Jason Moran, Graham Kinniburgh, Lewis Moran, Andrew Veniamin (killed by Domenic "Mick" Gatto, who was later acquitted on grounds of self-defence), and police informants Terrence and Christine Hodson. Mario Condello, a former lawyer and Carlton Crew figure, was murdered on 6 February 2006 on the eve of his own murder trial, prompting public speculation—denied by police—about a resurgence of the killings.
Carl Williams pleaded guilty on 28 February 2007 to three murders. He was later bashed to death by fellow inmate Matthew Charles Johnson at Barwon Prison on 19 April 2010; Johnson was already serving multiple life sentences for other gangland murders. The Purana Taskforce laid charges in 15 murders resulting in 11 convictions and said it prevented six further killings, though many of the 36 deaths remain unsolved. The investigation later became entangled in controversy over the use of informants, including barrister Nicola Gobbo, which led to a Royal Commission and cast doubt on numerous convictions, and over a 2006 case in which Purana detectives concealed payments to a Crown witness, later ruled a miscarriage of justice by the Court of Appeal.
