Killing of Abby Choi
Documents violence · ongoing investigation — written to inform, not to shock.

Abby Choi (蔡天鳳), born 15 July 1994, was a Hong Kong model, socialite, and influencer with more than 100,000 followers on Instagram; less than two weeks before her death she was featured on the cover of the magazine L'Officiel Monaco. Her mother and stepfather's construction and mining businesses in mainland China had made the family wealthy, and some estimates placed Choi's net worth at more than HK$100 million at her death. She co-founded Paomes Charitable Organisation, a group dedicated to helping stray animals. Choi married Alex Kwong Kong-chi at 18; their three-year marriage produced two children and ended in divorce, though she stayed close to Kwong's family, and later had two more children with a second partner.
Choi was reported missing on 21 February 2023 after she failed to collect her daughter from school; she had last been seen entering a car driven by her hired driver, her former brother-in-law. On 24 February 2023, her headless body was discovered at a village house in Tai Po, Hong Kong. Some of her remains had been hidden inside a refrigerator, and some had been cooked; her skull and several ribs were later recovered from a pot. Police classified the case as murder after a meat slicer and an electric saw were found at the scene.
Police arrested three suspects on 25 February 2023: Choi's former brother-in-law and hired driver, Anthony Kwong Kong-kit, and his parents, Kwong Kau and Jenny Li Sui-heung, Choi's former parents-in-law. Alex Kwong Kong-chi, Choi's former husband, was arrested soon afterward, after a citywide manhunt, when he failed to flee Hong Kong by sea. Investigators alleged the killing was orchestrated by Kwong Kau over a monetary dispute involving a luxury apartment in Kadoorie Hill that Choi was believed to have bought but that was registered in his name. On 26 February 2023, police recovered Choi's severed head and ribs from a pot of cooked soup and arrested a fifth suspect, Ng Chi Wing, described as Kwong Kau's mistress, accused of helping hide Alex Kwong before his escape attempt. More than a hundred officers searched a Ta Kwu Ling landfill for her still-missing hands and torso, and DNA testing confirmed in March 2023 that the head was hers.
On 27 February 2023, prosecutors charged Alex Kwong Kong-chi, Anthony Kwong Kong-kit, and Kwong Kau with murder, and charged Jenny Li Sui-heung with perverting the course of justice; all four were denied bail. Two further suspects, Henry Lam Shun and Irene Pun Hau-yin, were arrested in early March 2023 and charged with abetting Alex Kwong's attempted escape. At an 8 May 2023 pre-trial conference, prosecutors said bloodstains matching Choi's DNA had been found in her former brother-in-law's car and that dozens of exhibits had been sent for testing. In December 2023, Choi's former husband and two former in-laws were additionally charged with preventing her burial, and in April 2024 Lam and Pun were jointly charged with perverting the course of justice over the escape attempt. While still awaiting trial for Choi's killing, Alex Kwong separately pleaded guilty to six unrelated theft and jumping-bail charges and was sentenced to three and a half years' imprisonment; Choi's mother separately sought a court injunction over the disputed apartment.
The case shocked Hong Kong and drew international media attention. Mourners gathered outside the crime scene in Tai Po's Lung Mei Village; a ritual to pay respects to Choi was held on 11 March 2023, and her funeral took place on 18 June 2023. Police said GPS records and CCTV footage helped solve the case and pledged to pursue justice for Choi and her family.
