Murder of Claire Tiltman
Documents violence — written to inform, not to shock.

On the evening of 18 January 1993, 16-year-old Claire Tiltman, a pupil at Dartford Grammar School for Girls, left her home in Woodward Terrace, Stone, to walk to a friend's house. Roughly 30 minutes later she was attacked in a small alley off London Road, Greenhithe, Kent, suffering nine stab wounds. She collapsed on the pavement and died of blood loss before help arrived. A pathologist determined she had been attacked from behind while wearing a zipped-up jacket, and that death was caused by multiple stab wounds. Kent Police described the killing as motiveless, and it shocked the local community.
Kent Police launched Operation Artist, searching the area, issuing public appeals including a £1,000 reward, and taking more than 1,500 statements, but no suspect was charged at the time and the case went cold. Claire's parents, Linda and Cliff Tiltman, campaigned publicly for years to keep the case active; Linda died in March 2008 and Cliff in September 2012, before the case was solved. In 2010, Kent Police's Cold Case Unit received Home Office funding to re-examine the evidence using modern forensic techniques. A group of Claire's school friends formed the "Justice for Claire" campaign, organizing memorial events including a candlelit walk in January 2013 retracing her final steps.
Investigators focused on Colin Steven Ash-Smith, a local man previously convicted of two other violent knife attacks on women in the same area: a 1988 attempted rape, strangulation and stabbing of a 27-year-old woman in Swanscombe, and a 1995 stabbing of a 21-year-old woman, Charlotte Barnard, in Greenhithe, less than 400 metres from where Claire was killed. Ash-Smith pleaded guilty to both attacks in December 1996 and was serving a life sentence with a 15-to-21-year minimum term. In September 2013, detectives searching Ash-Smith's family home found a newspaper marking the first anniversary of Claire's death. Investigators also obtained testimony from Stefan Dubois, who had shared a cell with Ash-Smith at HMP Wakefield between 2001 and 2003, describing an alleged confession involving a girl on a zebra crossing — a detail matching Claire's case. Changes introduced by the Criminal Justice Act 2003 allowed Ash-Smith's prior convictions and admissions to be presented to a jury as "bad character" evidence. On 12 February 2014, the Crown Prosecution Service announced Ash-Smith would be charged with Claire's murder.
Ash-Smith's trial was held at Inner London Crown Court (Southwark) in late 2014, prosecuted by Brian Altman QC. The defense argued there was no direct physical evidence linking Ash-Smith and sought to raise doubt by referencing another convicted killer active in London around the same period. Mr Justice Sweeney permitted the bad-character evidence to be heard. After five weeks of evidence, the jury convicted Ash-Smith of murder on 11 December 2014, following three hours of deliberation. On 12 December 2014, Mr Justice Sweeney sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years, describing the murder as premeditated and Claire as a chosen vulnerable victim. Ash-Smith's subsequent appeal against conviction, on the grounds that prejudicial material had been wrongly admitted, was rejected. He remains imprisoned at HMP Durham.
