Overview

On January 23, 1991, at approximately 1:20 a.m., Constable Darrell Lunsford, the Precinct 3 Constable for Nacogdoches County, Texas, pulled over a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with Maine license plates traveling on U.S. Highway 59 through Garrison, Texas. He activated his dashboard camera before approaching the vehicle, which contained three men — Reynaldo Villarreal (the driver), his older half-brother Baldemar Villarreal, and Jesus Cortez Zambrano. Unknown to Lunsford, the men were transporting 31 pounds (14 kg) of marijuana from Houston to Chicago for sale.

The Attack

After questioning the driver about identification, Lunsford asked to search the trunk. The men reluctantly complied, and Lunsford detected the smell of marijuana. Baldemar Villarreal exited the vehicle against instructions, and moments later he and Reynaldo carried out a coordinated takedown, forcing Lunsford to the ground. Zambrano joined in, and the three men beat and kicked Lunsford, stabbed him repeatedly, and took his handgun. Baldemar Villarreal shot Lunsford in the neck, severing his spinal cord and killing him instantly. The men then moved his body into a nearby ditch and fled in their vehicle, leaving Lunsford's cruiser behind. The entire attack was captured on Lunsford's dashboard camera.

Victim

Darrell Edward Lunsford, Sr. was born on October 20, 1943, in Houston. He married Shirley Jo Cotton in 1962, and the couple had two children. In addition to his role as Precinct 3 Constable, a position he was elected to in 1983, Lunsford ran his own auto repair shop and parts store in Garrison. He was 47 years old at the time of his death.

Investigation and Arrests

Minutes before the murder, Sheriff's Deputy Don Welch had passed the scene and later saw the suspects' vehicle speeding away; he found Lunsford's body and radioed for help. Chief Deputy Thomas Stanaland discovered the dashboard camera footage and made a copy for investigators. The three suspects abandoned their vehicle near Garrison and fled on foot. Reynaldo Villarreal was arrested the same day; Baldemar Villarreal was captured two days later; Zambrano was apprehended about a week after the murder.

Convictions

All three men were tried and convicted in connection with Lunsford's murder. Baldemar Sambrano Villarreal, identified as the shooter, was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Reynaldo Sambrano Villarreal received a 40-year sentence. Jesus Cortez Zambrano pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years; he was released in March 2018 after serving 27 years.

Legacy

Footage from Lunsford's dashboard camera has since been used in law enforcement training nationally. Texas state trooper Andy Lopez Jr., who had studied the video, credited it with helping him survive a similar traffic-stop shootout in Refugio, Texas, in September 1991, for which he was awarded the Texas Department of Public Safety Medal of Valor.
