Disappearance

On the afternoon of 27 February 2018, eight-year-old Gabriel Cruz Ramírez left his grandmother's house in Las Hortichuelas, a village in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar area of Almería, Andalusia, Spain, to walk the roughly 100-metre route to his cousins' house. He never arrived. When Cruz had not returned by 6:00 p.m., his grandmother went to the cousins' house and learned he had never been there. Neighbors began searching the area, and his parents — who were away at the time — were alerted and returned to join the search. The family contacted police at 8:30 p.m. that evening.

Search

Cruz's disappearance triggered what became the largest coordinated search for a missing person in Spanish history, eventually involving more than 5,000 people, including roughly 3,000 volunteers and 2,000 professionals. The Civil Guard expanded its search radius from 6 kilometers to as far as 12 kilometers around wells, old mines, and uninhabited houses, and a specialized diving team searched more than 500 points, including wells and cisterns. The investigation was complicated by the absence of road or security cameras in the sparsely populated area. Nearly a week into the search, a white T-shirt bearing traces of Cruz's DNA was found about 4 kilometers from where he was last seen; investigators later determined that its discovery had been staged. Cruz remained missing for twelve days in total.

Arrest and recovery

On 11 March 2018, Cruz's body was found in the trunk of a vehicle belonging to Ana Julia Quezada, the romantic partner of the boy's father, Ángel David Cruz. Quezada was under surveillance at the time and was seen removing stones and planks — and a small body — from a family cottage in Rodalquilar before driving to her home in La Puebla de Vícar, where she was arrested after officers found the body in her car's trunk. Investigators' official account stated that Quezada had killed Cruz on the day of his disappearance, suffocating him and burying him at the cottage under decorative stones and planks.

Confession and conviction

Quezada initially denied guilt but confessed to killing Cruz two days after her arrest. She was charged with murder, kidnapping, and crimes against moral integrity. At her first court appearance she said she had suffocated Cruz following an argument, an account investigators partly disputed based on the timeline established by the autopsy. She also told investigators she had discarded Cruz's clothing in a container in the town of Retamar; searchers recovered the items except for the T-shirt she had separately staged as a false lead. In September 2019, Quezada was found guilty of murder.

Impact

The case drew nationwide attention in Spain. A public demonstration calling for Cruz's safe return was held in Almería two days before his body was found. Cruz's parents said he loved fish and had wanted to become a marine biologist; afterward, a small-fish symbol appeared in windows, schools, and public spaces across the country in a show of solidarity with the family. The investigation became known in Spanish media as "Operación Nemo."
