Killing of Ghazala Javed

Ghazala Javed (1 January 1988 – 18 June 2012) was a Pashtun playback singer from the Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. She began her singing career in 2004 and became widely popular among young, progressive Pashtuns in Pakistan and Afghanistan. In late 2007, as the Pakistani Taliban strengthened their hold on Swat, Javed and her family relocated to Peshawar, where she continued to build her career, recording songs such as "Baran dy Baran dy" and "Lag Rasha Kana." She went on to perform at stage shows in Dubai and Kabul, reportedly earning between $12,000 and $15,000 per wedding performance, and was described by a Radio Kabul director as the most requested and highest-paid Pashto singer of her time. She received a Filmfare Award nomination in 2010 and a Khyber Award in 2011.
On 7 February 2010, Javed married Jehangir Khan, a property dealer from Peshawar. She subsequently discovered he was already married, and the couple separated; she moved back in with her parents in November 2010. On 12 October 2011, she filed for divorce in a civil court in Swat, and the court ruled in her favor on 4 December 2011.
On 18 June 2012, Javed and her father were shot dead in a drive-by shooting carried out by gunmen on a motorcycle. On 16 December 2013, the Swat District and Sessions Court found her former husband, Jehangir Khan, guilty of killing her and her father, sentencing him to two death sentences and imposing a fine of Rs 70 million. On 22 May 2014, the Peshawar High Court set aside this sentence based on a compromise reached between Jehangir Khan and the heirs of the two victims.
