Murder of João Hélio

On the evening of February 7, 2007, six-year-old João Hélio Fernandes Vieites was riding in the back seat of his mother's car in the Oswaldo Cruz neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro when the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light and surrounded by armed men during a carjacking. His mother, Rosa Cristina Fernandes, attempted to unbuckle his seatbelt but was pushed aside; the car door closed on the seatbelt, leaving João Hélio's body caught outside the vehicle as the assailants drove off with him still attached.
The assailants drove approximately 7 km through the neighborhoods of Oswaldo Cruz, Madureira, Campinho, and Cascadura, dragging the child's body along the pavement. Witnesses, including patrons at roadside bars and a motorcyclist who pursued the car, tried to alert the occupants, but the car did not stop. Police Chief Hercules Pires do Nascimento said at the time that the assailants were aware a child was being dragged and drove erratically in an apparent attempt to dislodge the body. The car was eventually abandoned on a dead-end street in Cascadura, with João Hélio's body still attached; the occupants fled on foot after searching the vehicle for valuables.
Less than eight hours after the killing, the assailants were arrested by Rio de Janeiro's 30th Precinct of the Civil Police, after the family of one of the group turned them in. Five people were identified as participants: Carlos Eduardo Toledo de Lima (23, described as the group's leader and driver), Diego Nascimento da Silva (18), Ezequiel Toledo de Lima (16, Carlos Eduardo's brother), Tiago de Abreu Matos (19), and Carlos Roberto da Silva (21). On January 30, 2008, Judge Marcela Assad Karam sentenced the adult defendants to prison terms ranging from 39 to 45 years; Ezequiel Toledo de Lima, a minor at the time of the crime, was held under the juvenile justice system and later released in 2010.
The killing drew intense media coverage and public outrage across Brazil, in part because of the assailants' apparent indifference and the absence of any police presence along the route despite passing several security installations. It prompted public protests, a solidarity march retracing the route on March 10, 2007, a mass and downtown march in mid-February 2007, tributes from several Rio Carnival samba schools, and the naming of a park and a public square in João Hélio's memory. The case also fueled a national debate in Brazil over the age of criminal responsibility for minors and over responses to urban violence. Three months later, on May 1, 2007, two police officers were killed near the same intersection where the carjacking began, an event that was followed by a large police operation in the Complexo do Alemão favela complex.
