Murder of Kenneth Zeller
Documents violence — written to inform, not to shock.

Kenneth Zeller (June 5, 1945 – June 22, 1985) worked as a teacher and librarian in Toronto, employed over the course of his career by Davisville Public School, Williamson Road Junior Public School, and Western Technical-Commercial School. On the night of June 22, 1985, he was killed in Toronto's High Park in an attack that has been characterized as a homophobic hate crime.
According to the account of the incident, a group of five teenage boys, ranging in age from 15 to 18, set out that evening with the stated aim of attacking a gay man. The group had been drinking and were celebrating the end of their school year. They traveled to High Park because it was known as an area frequented by gay men for cruising. A witness reported overhearing members of the group discussing going to the park to "beat up a fag" and "get money from a queer."
At the park, the group encountered Zeller, who attempted to walk past them but was tripped by one of the boys. Zeller tried to run from the group, and they chased him roughly 100 meters to his parked car. He managed to open the car door but was attacked before he could get inside. The group assaulted him for approximately three minutes, then vandalized his car before leaving the scene. Zeller's body was discovered after midnight on June 23, 1985.
The five teenagers were arrested on June 28, 1985, and were tried as adults. All five pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were each sentenced to nine years in prison.
The killing received substantial media coverage in Toronto and became the subject of cultural works addressing homophobic violence. Playwright Robin Fulford wrote "Steel Kiss," a play about the case produced by Buddies in Bad Times theatre; the 1991 production, directed by Ken McDougall, was nominated for a Dora Award and featured actors Andrew Akman, Michael Waller, Derek Aasland, and Fab Fillippo. Fulford later wrote a sequel play, "Gulag," in 1996; the two plays were jointly revived by Buddies in Bad Times in 1999 in response to the October 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard in the United States.
Filmmaker John Greyson produced "The Making of Monsters," a film that examined the case through the lens of radical queer activists disrupting the production of a sanitized commercial television dramatization of the killing. The film screened at several film festivals in 1991 but was never given a general commercial release.
The case also prompted the Toronto District School Board to implement a program intended to address discrimination based on sexual orientation. The killing was later dramatized on the television series "Killer Kids."
