Death of Lorenzo González Cacho

Lorenzo Ahmed González Cacho, born November 29, 2001, was an eight-year-old boy living in Dorado del Mar, Puerto Rico, with his mother, Ana Cacho González, and two sisters. His parents were in the process of divorcing at the time of his death. He attended Dorado Academy and was active in a youth soccer team.
On March 9, 2010, Ana Cacho brought Lorenzo to a Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Dorado between approximately 5:00 and 5:30 a.m., with severe injuries. He was pronounced dead at the clinic. Cacho initially told authorities that Lorenzo had fallen from his bed, but an autopsy found this account inconsistent with his injuries, which included severe trauma to the face and head and three stab wounds to the face.
The Puerto Rico Department of Justice identified several individuals as suspects over the following years, though none were charged until 2016. Ana Cacho González was named a suspect nine days after the murder; her two daughters were removed from her home on March 30, 2010, and she has maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings. Other individuals identified as suspects at various points included Cacho's boyfriend at the time, a friend, and a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. A sixth individual, Luis Gustavo Rivera Seijo, known as "El Manco," a homeless man with a previously diagnosed mental disorder who had grown up in the same neighborhood, had been incorrectly released from jail on the night of the murder.
On March 9, 2015, five years after the killing, Puerto Rico's Justice Department announced that all suspects except Rivera Seijo were no longer considered suspects. On March 7, 2016, the Department announced first-degree murder charges against Rivera Seijo. A judge found probable cause for his arrest on March 8, 2016. However, the charges were dropped on April 28, 2016, after a judge determined his confession contained errors and there was insufficient forensic evidence placing him at the residence at the time of the murder. The charges were dropped again on June 7, 2016, following an appeal.
The case attracted significant public attention in Puerto Rico, partly due to coverage by the gossip-news program SuperXclusivo, which conducted independent investigations. Reported irregularities included failure to secure the crime scene, which was cleaned before forensic analysis could be completed. Ana Cacho's father met with then-Governor Luis Fortuño and gave him an envelope described in reporting as mysterious. The Secretary of Justice at the time, Antonio Sagardía, resigned his post to become Ana Cacho's attorney, a move that was publicly criticized. As of the available reporting, no one has been convicted in Lorenzo González Cacho's death.
