Lynsey Quy (née Wilson) was a 21-year-old barmaid from Southport, Merseyside, who lived with her husband Mitchell Quy, a casino croupier, along with their son and her daughter from a previous relationship. The couple had married in August 1995 when Lynsey was 17 and pregnant by another man. Their marriage was marked by domestic violence, and Lynsey had written in her diary about the turbulence of the relationship and her wish to divorce.
In December 1998, Lynsey was reported missing, with Mitchell Quy claiming she had voluntarily left the family, including reportedly walking out on her children over Christmas and running off with another man. This triggered a highly publicised 18-month missing persons search. Lynsey's family disputed the idea that she had left voluntarily. Mitchell Quy participated in public appeals, including a televised appearance on ITV's This Morning in October 1999, where he was interviewed by Richard and Judy and his body language was analysed by experts. When directly asked by a reporter whether he had killed Lynsey, he declined to answer. Police, who from early in the investigation suspected she had been a victim of marital violence, searched the family home but found nothing of use. The family received support from Marie McCourt, mother of Helen McCourt, another missing person case from 1988.
In June 2000, the case was resolved when body parts were discovered at Southport Pleasureland. On 8 June 2000, police searched sites near the theme park's attractions and identified a torso buried in a shallow grave as Lynsey's remains. She had been decapitated and dismembered by her husband, with body parts hidden near a roller coaster; her arms and legs were found the following day dumped near a railway line, though her head and hands were never located. Mitchell Quy was arrested on 7 June 2000 and admitted his guilt.
At trial, which began at North Sefton magistrates in June 2000, the court heard that Mitchell Quy had murdered his wife by strangulation between 15 December 1998 and 5 February 1999 while their children slept in another room, before dismembering her body in the bathroom with help from his brother Elliot, who held open bin bags. The defence argued for manslaughter. Mitchell Quy was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2001, with a minimum term of 17 years. Elliot Quy was jailed for seven years for helping dispose of the body, and their father, Michael Quy, was charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
In the aftermath, Lynsey's brother Peter Wilson died by suicide in 2001. Mitchell Quy's father, Michael Quy, died in 2013. Mitchell Quy's applications for parole were rejected in 2017, 2022, and January 2023, reportedly due to bullying behaviour and drug use in prison, despite having completed therapeutic work. Lynsey's father, also named Peter Wilson, publicly opposed his release.
