Murder of Michael Causer

Michael Causer was an 18-year-old gay man living in Liverpool, England. In the early hours of 25 July 2008, following a house party, he was seriously assaulted while asleep. He was taken to the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery, where he underwent emergency brain surgery, and he died on 2 August 2008. According to evidence presented at trial, the attack was triggered when those present found sexually explicit images of Causer on his phone, and it was treated as motivated by his sexual orientation.
Two teenage men, James O'Connor and Gavin Alker, were charged with murder. O'Connor pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 11 and a half years. Alker, who argued he had acted in self-defence, was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter. A third man was charged with witness intimidation; separately, Michael Binsteed, who had contacted emergency services but initially lied about not knowing the attackers' identities, pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice and received a suspended sentence.
In the aftermath, a memorial fund led to the creation of the Michael Causer Foundation, which provides supported accommodation for vulnerable LGBT young people in North West England and became a registered charity in July 2011. Liverpool Pride is held around the anniversary of Causer's death.
