Oluwabamise “Bamise” Toyosi Ayanwole was a 22-year-old Nigerian fashion designer and the youngest of ten children. On 26 February 2022, after finishing work in the Ajah area of Lagos State, she boarded a bus rapid transit vehicle at Chevron, Lekki, intending to visit family in Oshodi.
Concerned about the journey, Ayanwole sent voice notes and video recordings of the bus interior and its plate number to a friend. Friends and relatives were unable to reach her afterward, and she was reported missing the following day. Her body was found near Carter Bridge on Lagos Island on 7 March 2022.
The BRT driver, Andrew Ominikoron, was arrested and arraigned in March 2022 on charges that included conspiracy, attempted rape, murder, rape, and sexual assault. He pleaded not guilty. On 2 May 2025, a Lagos State High Court convicted him of Ayanwole’s murder and attempted rape, as well as rape and sexual assault involving two other women. The court sentenced him to death for the murder, 14 years’ imprisonment for the attempted rape of Ayanwole, life imprisonment for rape, and three years for sexual assault.
The case prompted public protests and scrutiny of passenger safety on Lagos BRT services. Officials called for improved security measures, including functioning CCTV in buses.
