Murder of Shawn Seesahai

Shawn Seesahai was 19 years old when he was killed on 13 November 2023 in Stowlawn Playing Fields, a park in the Stow Heath area of Wolverhampton, England. Seesahai had travelled to the United Kingdom from his home in Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory, six months earlier to receive medical treatment, and was living in Birmingham at the time of his death. His family later spent their life savings to repatriate his body to Anguilla and took out a loan to attend the trial; his parents could not afford to attend the sentencing hearing.
On the day of the killing, Seesahai travelled from Birmingham to Wolverhampton with two friends. He and one friend were in the park when a confrontation occurred with two 12-year-old boys, reportedly arising from a dispute over a bench or after one of the boys shoulder-barged Seesahai. Accounts presented at trial differed: one boy claimed Seesahai and another man had approached the boys and a female friend and that Seesahai had attacked them first, while Seesahai's friend testified that the pair were sitting drinking Red Bull and discussing Christmas plans when they were attacked without provocation. Seesahai reportedly tripped while attempting to flee and was then stabbed repeatedly with a machete. His friend testified at trial, "I was running for my life – I couldn't stay there and watch."
The trial took place at Nottingham Crown Court, beginning on 2 May 2024. Jurors heard that Seesahai had been stabbed in the back, legs and skull, and beaten, with one wound almost passing through his body and a piece of skull bone dislodged by the force of a blow. During the trial the two boys each sought to blame the other for delivering the fatal wound. On 10 June 2024, the jury convicted both boys of murder. Under section 45 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999, the boys' names were not permitted to be published; the trial judge, Mrs Justice Tipples, declined to lift this restriction, ruling that the boys' welfare outweighed the public interest in identification.
At sentencing on 27 September 2024, the judge did not determine which boy delivered the fatal blow but held both responsible for Seesahai's death. Each was sentenced to detention at His Majesty's pleasure, a sentence equivalent to a life term, with a minimum term of eight years and six months, reduced from the sentencing guideline starting point of 13 years due to mitigating factors including their young age and troubled backgrounds. One boy was noted to have been groomed and encouraged by older youths in his community toward carrying knives, having purchased the machete used in the killing for £40 two months before the attack. The boys, aged 12 at the time of the offence and 13 at sentencing, became the youngest people convicted of murder in the UK since the 1993 killing of James Bulger, and the youngest convicted of a knife murder. In December 2024, the Court of Appeal increased each boy's minimum term from eight-and-a-half years to ten years.
