Murder of Thelma Taylor

SOLVED1949St. Johns / Cathedral Park area, North Portland, Oregon2 SOURCESUPDATED JUL 2026
Illustrative

Thelma Anne Taylor was a 15-year-old sophomore at Roosevelt High School in Portland, Oregon. Shortly after 4:00 a.m. on August 5, 1949, she was waiting for a bus in the St. Johns neighborhood of north Portland, on her way to a summer job picking beans, when she was approached by Morris Leland, a 22-year-old ex-convict, who led her to a secluded area near the Willamette River.

Leland held Taylor captive overnight. In the early morning of August 6, 1949, she began calling for help after hearing railroad workers nearby, and Leland killed her. He concealed her body in a shallow grave and disposed of the weapons in the river.

Taylor's disappearance drew significant attention, and her body was discovered on August 11, 1949. That same day, Leland was arrested by Portland Police on an unrelated car-theft charge. He was not initially a suspect but subsequently confessed to her kidnapping and murder. On August 19, 1949, he was indicted for first-degree murder.

Leland's trial began on October 4, 1949, with a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. On November 11, 1949, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. After appeals and a denied request for a new trial, he was again sentenced to death in 1951, and was executed at the Oregon State Penitentiary on January 9, 1953.

Thelma Taylor was buried at Historic Columbian Cemetery in North Portland. The site where she was killed is now within an industrial area, while adjacent land was later redeveloped into Cathedral Park, which opened in 1980.
