Killings of Manfred and Marísia von Richthofen

On October 31, 2002, Manfred Albert von Richthofen, an engineer, and his wife Marísia von Richthofen, a psychiatrist, were killed in their home in the Brooklin Velho neighborhood of São Paulo, Brazil. Prosecutors and police concluded that the couple's daughter, Suzane von Richthofen, let her boyfriend Daniel Cravinhos and his brother Cristian Cravinhos into the family mansion, after which the brothers went upstairs and beat the sleeping couple to death with iron bars. The scene was staged to resemble a robbery: jewelry was scattered, a briefcase containing cash was cut open, and a gun was placed near Manfred's body, though investigating officers later testified that the staging appeared amateurish, since valuables such as jewelry, phones and a firearm were left at the scene.

The relationship between Suzane and Daniel Cravinhos began in August 1999 and was opposed by Manfred and Marísia, who came to view Daniel — and his brother Cristian, who had a history of drug use — as unsuitable and disruptive influences on their daughter. Family tension escalated over the following years, including a Mother's Day 2002 argument and repeated police call-outs to the family's later residence in Campo Belo to break up disputes between Manfred and Daniel. When Manfred refused to buy Suzane an apartment so she could live with Daniel, the plan to murder her parents proceeded, according to the case record. On the night of the killings, Suzane brought her younger brother Andreas — then fifteen — to an internet café as a decoy while she, Daniel and Cristian drove to the mansion; Suzane had disabled the home's alarm and cameras in advance. After the killings, Suzane and Daniel established an alibi at a motel before returning with Andreas to "discover" the crime.

Police arrested the three after Cristian was found to have purchased a new motorcycle shortly after the murders. Suzane, Daniel and Cristian confessed to the killings on November 8, 2002. The case drew intense Brazilian media attention; thousands of people sought seats to watch the eventual jury trial, and Suzane's defense-arranged 2006 television interview was later cited by prosecutors as a factor in her being taken back into custody. The trial, held at the 1st Jury Court of São Paulo, was postponed twice due to defense disputes before concluding in the early hours of July 22, 2006. Suzane and Daniel Cravinhos were each sentenced to 39 years and 6 months in prison, and Cristian Cravinhos was sentenced to 38 years and 6 months. All three were later granted transitions to semi-open prison regimes; Suzane was released in January 2023 after roughly 20 years in custody. A subsequent state investigation into Manfred's finances and alleged illicit enrichment tied to his work on a São Paulo highway project was reopened in 2006 and closed again in 2015 for lack of evidence.
