Tangi and Bir Dagig massacres

Background
The Darfur region of Sudan has experienced civil war and violence against non-Arab communities since 2003. Although large-scale violence had diminished by the late 2010s and early 2020s, sporadic clashes and killings continued into early 2022. In March 2022, conflict escalated in South Darfur, with clashes between the Rizeigat and the Rapid Support Forces killing dozens of people.
The Attacks
Little is documented about the direct prelude to the violence. On April 9, 2022, gunmen riding camels and horses raided the village of Tangi in West Darfur, killing an unknown number of people. The following day, April 10, the same group of gunmen attacked the nearby village of Bir Dagig. Across both attacks, twelve civilians were killed and ten more were injured. The attackers also stole cattle and other property belonging to villagers.
Aftermath
Later that month, further clashes broke out in West Darfur between the Rapid Support Forces and Masalit tribesmen at the Kreinik refugee camp, resulting in more than 200 deaths. That subsequent violence was reported to be in retribution for the killing of two Masalit tribesmen.
