On the night of 31 May 1953, Barbara Songhurst, 16, and Christine Reed, 18, were cycling home along the River Thames towpath between Teddington Lock and Petersham, after an evening with friends camping nearby, when they were attacked. A courting couple on the towpath were the last to see them alive. Both young women were sexually assaulted and killed, and their bodies placed in the river. Songhurst's body was recovered on 1 June and Reed's on 6 June. Post-mortem examinations, conducted by pathologist Keith Mant, established that both had been raped and had died of injuries from a bladed weapon and a hatchet.

The investigation, led by Detective Chief Inspector Herbert Hannam, questioned more than 1,600 people, including US servicemen stationed nearby and known offenders, all of whom were eliminated. Investigators also considered a possible link to two earlier sexual assaults in the area. A facial composite from eyewitness descriptions led to Alfred Charles Whiteway, a 21-year-old labourer, who was arrested on 28 June 1953 in connection with one of those assaults. Forensic examination found human blood on his shoes, and a small axe matching the victims' wounds was recovered and linked to him after he admitted concealing it.

On 30 July 1953, Whiteway made statements to Hannam that police characterized as a confession. He was charged with both murders on 18 September 1953, but because the forensic evidence more strongly tied him to Songhurst's death, the Crown tried him solely for her murder. At his Old Bailey trial before Mr Justice Hilbery, prosecutors presented the alleged confession and the forensic evidence, while the defence challenged the reliability of the confession; Whiteway testified and denied confessing. On 2 November 1953 the jury convicted him of Songhurst's murder. The charge relating to Reed's murder was ordered to lie on file. His appeal was rejected, and Alfred Whiteway was hanged at Wandsworth Prison on 22 December 1953.
