Paul Broussard, a 27-year-old Houston banker, died after being beaten and stabbed by a group of ten youths from The Woodlands outside a Montrose nightclub in the early hours of July 4, 1991; delayed medical response and a lack of police urgency spurred major Houston gay-rights protests, and all ten attackers were ultimately convicted via plea bargains without trial.

José "Joe" Campos Torres, a 23-year-old Mexican-American Army veteran, was beaten by Houston Police Department officers after his arrest on May 5, 1977, and his body was found three days later in Buffalo Bayou. Two officers received only probation and a $1 fine at the state level, sparking outrage and the 1978 Moody Park Riot; three officers were later convicted federally of civil rights violations.

Tynesha Stewart, a 19-year-old Texas A&M student, was murdered on March 15, 2007, by her 27-year-old former boyfriend Timothy Wayne Shepherd during her spring break visit home. Shepherd confessed after questioning, and was convicted in October 2008 and sentenced to 99 years in prison.
