Giulio Regeni vanished in Cairo on the fifth anniversary of the uprising he had come to study. Nine days later, his body was found in a roadside ditch, bearing extensive signs of torture. He was 28, a Cambridge PhD student researching Egypt's independent trade unions. Italian prosecutors charged four Egyptian security officials with his abduction, and Egypt has denied any involvement.
