14 January 2012 Basra Bombing
Documents violence · ongoing investigation — written to inform, not to shock.

On 14 January 2012, an explosion struck a security checkpoint in the city of Basra, southern Iraq, as large crowds of Shia pilgrims passed through on their way to a major Shia mosque in the Az Zubayr district, roughly 20 km (12 miles) south-west of Basra. At least 53 people were killed and more than 130 others were injured, according to reporting compiled by Wikipedia's "January 2012 Iraq attacks" article.
The attack occurred on the final day of the 40-day Arba'in observance, during which hundreds of thousands of Shia pilgrims travel to Karbala and other holy sites in Iraq. Officials estimated that as many as 16 million pilgrims had passed through Karbala in the two weeks preceding the bombing.
There were conflicting accounts of how the explosion was carried out. Some reports indicated a suicide bomber disguised as a police officer reached the checkpoint using a fake identification card. Other reports attributed the blast to a powerful roadside bomb planted near the road. Ali Ghanim, identified as the chief of the security committee in Basra, stated that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber, describing how a man carrying a box and distributing food drew the suspicion of a security officer, who attempted to search the box before the man detonated explosives. As of the source reporting, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
In the aftermath, security forces sealed off the main hospital in Basra due to fears of further violence. The Iraqi military responded by intensifying security measures nationwide, including the deployment of 30,000 Iraqi soldiers to Karbala to protect pilgrims.
The Basra bombing was one of several attacks across Iraq that day. Roadside bombings in Mosul, Baqubah, and Al-Karmah killed one policeman and injured at least nine other people. A separate car bombing targeting a police patrol in Tikrit killed a bystander and injured two officers.
The 14 January Basra bombing occurred amid a broader wave of attacks across Iraq in January 2012 that appeared to target Shia Muslims, including bombings in Baghdad and Nasiriyah on 5 January and a further bombing in Baghdad on 27 January. No perpetrator has been identified or charged in connection with the Basra attack based on available reporting, and the case remains unsolved.
