1994 Solar Temple massacres

Illustrative

The Order of the Solar Temple (OTS) was a neo-Templar religious group founded in 1984 by Joseph Di Mambro, with Luc Jouret as second in command, drawing on Rosicrucian, Theosophical, and New Age beliefs. At its peak in January 1989 it had 442 members. The group taught that a ritual death, called "transit," would allow members to travel spiritually to the star Sirius rather than truly die. Following internal scandals — including a 1993 gun scandal involving Jouret — and growing external pressure, leadership began planning a mass "transit," documented in advance in letters known as The Testament.

On 30 September 1994, former members Antonio Dutoit, his wife Suzanne, and their three-month-old son Christopher were ritualistically killed in a chalet in Morin-Heights, Quebec, by OTS members Joël Egger and Jerry Genoud, reportedly acting on orders from Di Mambro, who held a grievance against the family and may have believed the infant was linked to an antichrist figure. Jerry and Colette Genoud, who cleaned the scene, later died in the chalet fire they set on 4 October.

On the night of 2–3 October 1994, 23 people died in Cheiry, Switzerland. Some victims were shot, some suffocated with plastic bags, and some showed signs of having been restrained; bodies were arranged in a hidden ritual chamber. Investigators concluded shootings were carried out by Egger and Jouret, though it is possible others were involved. Separately, at Salvan, Switzerland, 25 people — including Di Mambro and Jouret themselves — died from injected poison combining curare, opioids, and benzodiazepines, in buildings that were subsequently set on fire using a remote, telephone-triggered ignition system. The fires in Switzerland were discovered on 5 October 1994 when Swiss examining magistrate André Piller responded to a blaze in Cheiry and, with police, found hidden rooms containing bodies and OTS documents.

Investigators later divided the dead into three categories described in the group's own letters: "Traitors" who were murdered, "Immortals" who were killed with some degree of prior consent, and "Awakened" members who died by voluntary suicide. A 1996 Swiss magistrate's report concluded only 15 of the 53 deaths could be confirmed as voluntary suicides. The investigation was hampered by fragmented jurisdiction across three Swiss cantons and criticized for early decisions, including the destruction of the Cheiry ritual chamber, fueling conspiracy theories.

The case drew international attention and was compared by media to the Jonestown and Waco deaths. The OTS was banned in Quebec on 6 October 1994. Further OTS-linked mass deaths occurred in France in 1995 and in Canada in 1997, bringing the total number of deaths connected to the group to 74. Only one person, Michel Tabachnik, was ever tried in connection with OTS deaths, in relation to the 1995 incident; he was acquitted in two separate trials.
