Illustrative

On 10 January 2015, two suicide bombers attacked a crowded café in Jabal Mohsen, a predominantly Alawite neighborhood of Tripoli, Lebanon. The attack killed nine people and wounded more than 30 others. After the first bomber detonated his explosives, a second suicide bomber approached the Abu Imran café. Before he could detonate, 60-year-old Issa Khaddour, known as "Abu Ali," a father of seven, rushed the bomber and tackled him, an action credited with preventing further deaths.

Following the bombing, the wounded were transported to a hospital in Zgharta rather than one in Tripoli itself, due to fears among Jabal Mohsen residents that Sunni Islamist mobs might target wounded Alawites if they were taken to a hospital within Tripoli. The dead were buried on 12 January 2015.

The al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it targeted members of the Alawite sect. The bombing was the first suicide attack on a civilian neighborhood in the area in nearly a year, coming after a security sweep had temporarily calmed the long-running Bab al-Tabbaneh–Jabal Mohsen conflict between Sunni and Alawite residents of Tripoli. Nusra Front stated the attack was carried out in revenge for the Syrian government's actions against Sunnis during the Syrian civil war, and for a bombing of Sunni mosques that had been blamed on Alawites. However, Lebanon's interior minister, Nohad Machnouk, said on 11 January 2015 that the attack was in fact carried out by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The United States issued a strong condemnation of the attack. On 11 January 2015, the Qalamoun branch of the Nusra Front threatened further attacks against Jabal Mohsen and Hezbollah. On 10 April 2015, one of the men implicated in the bombings was killed by Lebanese security forces.

Separately, a suicide bombing was reportedly planned for another café in Jabal Mohsen to coincide with the 2015 Beirut bombings on 12 November 2015, but the individual believed to be the intended bomber was detained before the attack could occur.
