    1983 Beirut Barracks Bombings

    On October 23, 1983, two truck bombs struck buildings housing U.S. and French peacekeepers in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 307 people — 241 U.S. and 58 French military personnel, six civilians, and two attackers — in one of the deadliest single-day losses for the U.S. military since World War II.

    2024 Hezbollah Headquarters Strike

    On 27 September 2024, an Israeli airstrike destroyed Hezbollah's underground headquarters in Beirut's Dahieh suburb, killing Hezbollah secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah, senior Hezbollah commanders, and an Iranian Revolutionary Guard officer, along with at least 33 people total and injuring more than 195.

    1983 US Embassy Bombing in Beirut

    A suicide car bombing destroyed the U.S. Embassy in Beirut on April 18, 1983, killing 63 people, including embassy staff, CIA personnel, U.S. military members, and Lebanese civilians. The Islamic Jihad Organization claimed responsibility; U.S. courts later attributed the attack to Hezbollah with Iranian backing, which Hezbollah has denied.

    Lebanon Hostage Crisis

    Between 1982 and 1992, 104 foreign nationals — mostly Americans and Western Europeans — were kidnapped in Lebanon during the Lebanese Civil War, largely by a group of men affiliated with Hezbollah and linked to Iran. At least eight hostages died in captivity before the crisis ended in 1992.

    1982–1983 Tyre headquarters bombings

    Two suicide bombings struck the Israeli military headquarters building in Tyre, Lebanon, in November 1982 and November 1983, killing a combined 104 Israelis and dozens of Lebanese and Palestinian detainees.

    Assassination of Bachir Gemayel

    On 14 September 1982, a bomb detonated at Kataeb Party headquarters in Achrafieh, Beirut, killing Lebanese president-elect Bashir Gemayel and 23 other party members; the attack was carried out by an SSNP member and led to Israeli occupation of West Beirut and the Sabra and Shatila massacre.

    Assassination of Rafic Hariri

    Former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri was killed along with 21 others when a massive truck bomb detonated near his motorcade in Beirut on 14 February 2005. After a lengthy UN-backed investigation, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon convicted Hezbollah operative Salim Ayyash in absentia in 2020, and two co-defendants were convicted in 2022; Hezbollah's leadership was not found to have been implicated.

    Bombing of the Palestine Research Center

    In February 1983, a car bomb destroyed the Palestine Research Center in Beirut, killing at least six people, after the institute's library and archive had already been seized by Israeli forces during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon.

    1994 Saydet al-Najat Church bombing

    A bomb exploded during Sunday Mass at Saydet al-Najat Church in Zouk Mikael, Lebanon, on February 27, 1994, killing 11 people and injuring 54. Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea was arrested and prosecuted, but the bombing trial collapsed, and he was later amnestied in a process widely described as a politically motivated "show trial."
