2019 Yala attack

On 6 November 2019, an attack targeted a security checkpoint in Yala Province, in southern Thailand. The assault left fifteen people dead and five others injured. Among the casualties were a police officer and a large number of village defense volunteers, a civilian paramilitary force used to support security operations in the region.

According to available reporting, ten men and five women died in the attack. This toll is described as the largest single-attack loss suffered by village defense forces during the ongoing South Thailand insurgency, a decades-long conflict involving separatist violence in Thailand's southern border provinces.

During the attack, assailants looted eight firearms from the victims, comprising one M16 rifle, two shotguns, and five pistols. To hinder pursuit by security forces attempting to track the attackers afterward, the perpetrators reportedly sprinkled tire spikes on roads, cut down trees to obstruct passage, and set tires on fire.
