Aishiyeh massacres

UNSOLVED1976Aishiya, Lebanon3 SOURCESUPDATED JUL 2026
Illustrative

In 1976, during the Lebanese Civil War, the village of Aishiya in Lebanon was the site of a mass killing of Lebanese Christian civilians. More than 70 civilians were killed, including at least seven children under the age of 16. The attack was carried out by Palestinian factions Fatah and As-Sa'iqa, which were backed by Syria at the time.

Accounts of the massacre describe specific acts of violence beyond the general killings: four people were reported to have been executed, and one person was reportedly burned alive. The Online Encyclopedia of Mass Violence has estimated that at least 100 people were injured in the attack, indicating a toll beyond those killed.

Following the massacre, the village of Aishiya was depopulated. It was subsequently used as a base of operations by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

The violence in Aishiya was not confined to 1976. On November 5, 1977, the town was attacked again, this time by As-Sa'iqa forces, resulting in the deaths of 41 people. This second attack demonstrates a pattern of repeated violence targeting the same community over more than a year.

The Aishiyeh massacres occurred within the broader context of the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990), a period marked by numerous instances of sectarian and factional violence across Lebanon, including other documented massacres such as the Damour massacre. The case is referenced in broader compilations of extrajudicial killings and political violence during this conflict.

The perpetrating factions are identified at an organizational level only. The case has not been formally adjudicated.
