Disappearance of Bruno Borges

Illustrative

Bruno de Melo Silva Borges, a Brazilian student, disappeared from his home in Rio Branco, Acre, on March 27, 2017, after his parents returned from a trip and had lunch with the family. He left on foot without money or identification, walked more than a kilometer to a taxi stand, and took a taxi to a motel. Motel staff said he had not been there, and it was believed he may have gone to a wooded area behind the property. A security camera captured Borges running toward his home at 2:29 p.m. on March 28, 2017; his father reported him missing, saying he had never disappeared before.

In his locked bedroom, Borges left encrypted messages covering the walls, ceiling, and floor; 14 handwritten, code-numbered books; and a 2-meter statue of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, whom he admired. He also left a decoding key drawn from a Scout manual. The Civil Police of the State of Acre investigated the disappearance, and Interpol was notified on April 18, 2017, though no evidence indicated Borges had left Brazil. Chief Fabrizzio Sobreira, coordinator of the Criminal Investigation Precinct, said on March 29 that all hypotheses were being considered. Investigators learned friends and a cousin had helped Borges prepare the project and had agreed not to disclose further details.

The case drew significant online attention after a video of Borges's bedroom, filmed without his family's permission, was posted publicly. He became known online as “Menino do Acre” (“Boy from Acre”), trending on Brazilian Twitter and inspiring several mobile phone games. Members of the public tried to decode his messages independently: two people from the state of Goiás built a collaborative website with a virtual keyboard for transcribing the symbols in published photographs of Borges's room, reporting 70,000 visitors in a single day, and a Facebook group formed for the same purpose grew to more than 10,000 members within two weeks.

On May 31, 2017, the Civil Police arrested a friend of Borges for giving false testimony and, in a search of his home, recovered furniture removed from Borges's bedroom along with contracts promising a share of his books' sale proceeds to two friends and a cousin who had helped him. The following day, the Civil Police of Acre said it would no longer treat the disappearance as a crime, citing “strong indications” that it was a scheme to promote his books; Borges's mother denied this, saying she had already known about the contracts and the furniture's relocation. After Borges's return, Acre's Public Security Advisory closed the case as an example of planned marketing.

On August 11, 2017, five months after he disappeared, Borges returned to his home barefoot, weakened, and dehydrated. Police chief Alcino Júnior said that day Borges would face no criminal charges and that his family should not be held responsible either. On August 15, Borges told Alcino Júnior he had left “of his own free will” and had not been coerced, but he did not disclose where he had hidden. He soon began revising his book, “TAC – Teoria da Absorção do Conhecimento,” released during his absence to negative reviews. By September 26, his weight had risen from 51 kg to 64 kg since his return.

Borges rejected the marketing-scheme characterization, saying his goal had been “to encourage people to acquire knowledge” and that the accusations came from sensationalist media. On January 9, 2018, one of the friends who had helped him sued him, alleging he had not received the share of book proceeds promised in their contract; the plaintiff later sought Borges's bank statements as part of the suit.
