Claudia Elizabeth Lawrence was born on 27 February 1974 in Malton, North Riding of Yorkshire. She trained as a chef, worked at hotels and restaurants in York, and joined the University of York's Goodricke College in 2006. In 2007 she bought a cottage in the York suburb of Heworth, near her workplace, and often spent evenings at a nearby pub. She never married and kept a series of relationships, some with married men, largely private from her family, a fact that later shaped the police investigation.

On 18 March 2009, Lawrence finished her shift at Goodricke College at 2:00 pm, was recorded on CCTV leaving on foot, then again near her home around 3:00 pm. She spoke to her parents by phone that evening; her mother described her as sounding normal and relaxed. She sent a final text at 8:23 pm and received one at 9:12 pm; no one is known to have heard from her since. She failed to report for work on 19 March. Her father and a friend entered her home on 20 March and found it undisturbed apart from a missing phone, hair straighteners and rucksack. Police were notified that afternoon and opened a missing-person inquiry, upgraded to a suspected-murder investigation about five weeks later.

The original investigation ruled out an accident along her route to work and considered, without substantiating, a chance encounter with a stranger. Lawrence's phone stayed connected to a mast in Heworth through the morning of 19 March before being deliberately switched off at 12:10 pm. Investigators concluded she had likely been abducted and killed by someone she knew, though no one has been charged. Public appeals included a June 2009 BBC Crimewatch reconstruction. In September 2009, Detective Superintendent Ray Galloway said the search had extended to Cyprus, where Lawrence had holidayed; detectives also searched the university campus. In October, police sought the driver of a rusty white van seen approaching women on her route to work. A March 2010 search in Heslington, prompted by information later thought a hoax, found nothing significant.

In 2013, police created a Major Crime Unit, which recovered new fingerprints and a man's DNA from a cigarette end in Lawrence's car, and cell-site data placing her in York's Acomb area beforehand. A fifth-anniversary Crimewatch appeal aired on 19 March 2014 alongside recovered CCTV of a silver Ford Focus hatchback slowing near her home. The new investigation, led by Detective Dai Malyn, made several arrests: a 59-year-old former university colleague was arrested in May 2014 on suspicion of her murder, then released without charge that November; the landlord of a pub she frequented was arrested in July 2014 on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and also released without charge. In March 2016, prosecutors declined to charge four other men arrested on suspicion of murder, citing insufficient evidence; all denied involvement.

Police released further CCTV of an unidentified man near the alleyway behind Lawrence's home in 2015. In August and September 2021, police searched Sand Hutton Gravel Pits northeast of York, draining a lake for examination; detective Wayne Fox, the senior investigating officer, said nothing significant was found. Her disappearance left her family unable to manage her assets. Her father's campaign for legal reform led to the Guardianship (Missing Persons) Act 2017, popularly known as Claudia's Law, which came into force in July 2019, letting families of missing people apply for guardianship of an estate 90 days after a disappearance. In 2024, her mother took part in a Wondery podcast about the case. Lawrence's disappearance remains unsolved.
