January 1995 Algiers bombing

SOLVED1995Central Algiers, near Algiers police headquarters, Algeria3 SOURCESUPDATED JUL 2026
Illustrative

On 30 January 1995, at approximately 3:20pm, a car bomb detonated on a busy street in central Algiers, Algeria. The device was a suicide car bombing that used more than 220 lb (100 kg) of explosives. It was detonated in front of a bank office located across the street from Algiers' police headquarters, and near the city's main post office and train station.

The explosion killed 42 people and injured more than 250 others. The bombing occurred during the Algerian Civil War, a period marked by sustained violence between Algerian government forces and armed Islamist groups. The attack was attributed to the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria (GIA), one of the principal militant organizations active during the conflict.

The choice of location — a densely trafficked commercial and administrative area near key civic and transit infrastructure — resulted in a high casualty count among people present in the area at the time. The attack is recorded as one of several bombings to strike Algiers during this period; the city was also bombed on 26 August 1992, and was later struck again on 11 April 2007 and 11 December 2007.

No individuals have been named or identified as charged, convicted, exonerated, or acquitted in connection with this specific bombing. The attribution to the GIA is organizational rather than an individual prosecution outcome.
